Brown Bag Lunch: Speaker Series

MEET DR. LEE FOOTE, AN APPLIED ECOLOGIST AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA
WHO IS DRAWN TO USING SCIENCE FOR SOLVING REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS.

“Mines, Bison, Climate Change – Oh My!”: Wicked Problems in Natural Resource Management

For good, durable policy to steer public decisions, high quality science is indispensable. However, it is not sufficient on its own. Scientific knowledge is out of its depth very quickly in matters of the heart, cultural significance, heritage, wants and wishes, equitability and governance structures, not to mention politics.

Of late, great change has occurred toward a “Post-truth era” where objective knowledge is trumped by power, positioning, framing, and intimidation.

In this seminar, Dr. Foote will suggest one way to position reliable scientific knowledge in relation to other ways of knowing, present a clear description of wicked problems and a way of handling them, and enter a plea for fairness and equitability in decision-making through trans-disciplinary involvement.

Dr. Foote will use humor, examples and invitations for audience participation to enliven these topics while leaving time for questions, comments, rebuttals or your own stories.
