Education — Yukon Native Teacher

Johanna McClements is committed to enhancing student life at Yukon College. The first year Bachelor of Education — Yukon Native Teacher Education program student has acted as an Orientation Leader and is a member of the Yukon College Student Union executive.

She initiated daily fruit baskets in the student lounge to promote a healthier lifestyle, helped create free coffee and muffin mornings for students and regularly tours high school students around Ayamdigut campus.

It’s important that students feel comfortable and at home here. Classes, assignments, exams can be stressful - providing a break, a treat, some fun, helps people relax and brings out a smile,” said Johanna.

Johanna credits instructors with the Lorene Robertson Writing Centre and her program advisor with helping her achieve the goal of writing strong, coherent coursework papers.

“The writing centre really helped with the basics of structuring my thoughts and writing clearly, and my program advisor pushed me to deepen my arguments. Their feedback helped take my writing to a higher level.”

For this single mother, such support makes a huge difference.

“I find that faculty and staff here provide a lot of support to students – there is always someone to talk to when I am challenged by life or schoolwork.”
