Manus Hopkins was happy to receive an Entrance Award Scholarship to Yukon College.
“Without it, I probably would have had to come up with tuition money with help from my parents,” said the 18-year old.
Manus won the award of full tuition and $400 cash last spring, when he graduated from Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
Manus is a heavy metal rocker who fronts the local band Warrmauth. He plans to study journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto next year. He enrolled in Yukon College’s liberal arts program, taking English and creative writing classes.
“I’ve planned on going away to a big city for as long as I can remember,” said Manus. “But I didn’t want to just leave Whitehorse straight out of high school,” he said. “So it’s nice to come to the College and get a feel for what post-secondary school is like while still being in a familiar place. Being at the College has done a really nice job of preparing me. The entrance award made this possible.”
